The formal French garden style, known as 'le jardin à la française', was developed in the 17th century by landscape architect André Le Nôtre. His most famous work is the gardens at Versailles, covering around 800 hectares. The style uses geometric shapes, symmetry and carefully clipped hedges to create an impression of order and control over nature.
