Paris has been the centre of the global fashion industry since the 17th century, when Louis XIV's court set the trends followed across Europe. The concept of 'haute couture', meaning high sewing or high fashion, originated in Paris in the mid-19th century. Today the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode regulates which fashion houses can use the prestigious haute couture label.
